Where to Stay near Nassfeld — A Quiet Farmhouse Base in Carinthia
Nassfeld is Carinthia's largest ski area — 110 kilometres of pistes spread across a sun-drenched plateau on the Italian border. Most visitors look for slope-side hotels at Tröpolach or up in the resort itself. But for those who want their evenings quiet, their kitchen their own, and their week to include more than just skiing, the right base is twenty-five minutes down the valley — in a restored farmhouse in the village of Möderndorf.
The Nassfeld ski area in one paragraph
Nassfeld-Pramollo straddles the Austrian-Italian border at 1,500 metres altitude, with the Karnische Alpen rising above. There are around 30 lifts and gondolas, 110 kilometres of groomed pistes, ski touring routes, freeride sections, an Italian-side connection via the Pramollo gondola, and one of the most reliable snow records in the southern Alps thanks to the southern exposure and altitude. The season runs from early December to mid-April.
Slope-side or down in the valley?
There is no wrong answer — only two different weeks. Slope-side stays in Tröpolach, Sonnenalpe and the resort itself put you on the lift in five minutes; the trade-off is that the village is small and very ski-focused, restaurants close early, and there is little to do once the skis are off. A valley stay — Hermagor, Möderndorf, the Gailtal villages — gives you a quieter night, a proper kitchen for evenings in, and a chance to combine the slopes with everything else the region has: Lake Weißensee under ice, Italian markets across the border, hot soup in a Gasthaus on the way home.
From the door of LAROGY's Hideaway in Möderndorf, the Tröpolach gondola is roughly twenty-five minutes by car. With a ski rack and an early start, you are on the first lift by nine and home in time for a slow lunch in the kitchen.
A typical Nassfeld week from the farmhouse
The pattern most of our guests fall into: three ski days at Nassfeld, one day skating on Lake Weißensee or walking the frozen valley, one day across the Italian border for lunch in Tarvisio or Udine, and an evening or two simply at the house with the fire on. Boots and skis can be left at a lift-station depot in Tröpolach for the week, so the apartment stays clean and dry. Equipment rental is easiest in Tröpolach itself; book online a week in advance for the best fit.
The apartments at LAROGY's Hideaway
The restored farmhouse holds two apartments. Apartment I — Familie has three bedrooms and sleeps up to six, ideal for families or two couples on a ski week together. Apartment II — Stube has two bedrooms, sleeps four, and centres on a traditional wood-panelled Stube — a warm, lamp-lit room that earns its keep on a winter evening. Both have full kitchens, fast Wi-Fi, garden access, and parking on site. The two apartments can be booked together for groups of up to ten.
When to book
Carnival and the Austrian winter school holidays — usually mid-February — are the busiest weeks of the Nassfeld season; for those dates we recommend booking by October. Early December and early March are the quietest, with full snow cover but no crowds. For families with school-age children, the second week of January and the last week of March are sweet spots: lower rates, mild weather, soft snow.
